Can my child care for this pet?
If you are buying a pet because your child is begging for one, be realistic and expect that you as the adult will be providing the primary regular care of the pet while teaching your child to help you care for it.
Too many pets are neglected because parents expect the child to take care of something they wanted a few months ago but have now lost interest in. Unless you as a parent really want the pet, do not bring it into your home.
Small mammals make a good first pet, as they are usually easy for children to handle and observe in a habitat or cage environment.
Small animals enjoy being handled but the time spent on their daily care is minimal compared to a puppy or kitten, and in the correct environment most small mammals will self exercise.
Most small mammals are perfectly happy with short periods of interaction, feeding once a day, changing the water and bedding and all these tasks are within the capabilities of a child with parental supervision.
Hamsters, Guinea Pigs, Gerbils, Rabbits, Rats and Mice are ideal children’s pets and can provide a positive learning experience without the commitment of time, cost and care that a dog or cat requires..
