Do Puppies Make Good Surprise Gifts?
Sometimes we hear a story of a Christmas morning surprise puppy that has been a treasured pet for many years, but more often a pet given as a surprise gift is not an appropriate fit for the family member or loved one receiving it and can end up in a shelter neglected and abandoned.
Please keep in mind that even though the person who is getting a pet for a gift is an animal lover, he or she will be spending the next 14 years or so with this animal, and may want to have some say in finding just the right personality and bond with their new pet.
Sometimes when a person has recently lost a beloved pet, is not ready for another animal and well meaning gifts can cause more emotional pain than healing.
A considerate way to offer a pet as a surprise gift is to buy the person some pet supplies, such as a dog bed, new bowl, collar and leash, for them to open. Along with the gift give a card stating you will accompany them to the shelter or breeder and buy them the pet of their choosing after the holiday.
This allows them to help choose their next “best friend” while still receiving a gift from you and creating an enjoyable experience for you both as well as a life long placement for the new pet.
